What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is an repetitive stress or overuse injury affecting the area of the wrist (the carpal tunnel) where the nerves and blood vessels enter the hand. These nerves supply feeling to the hand and movement to the muscles of the hand and fingers.  Carpal tunnel syndrome leads to pressure on these nerves which can cause wrist pain, hand pain, tingling, numbness, weakness and potential damage to the muscles of the hand and fingers.

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive stress injury that occurs most often with repetitive motions involving the forearm, wrist and hand.  Using a computer keyboard and mouse all day, driving, assembly work, hobbies involving the hands, playing instruments, and playing sports are all common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Repetitive stress adn overuse of the wrist and forearm causes swelling in the carpal tunnel, leading to pressure on the nerves that pass through the wrist.  This pressure and irritation on the nerves is what causes the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

What are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel symptoms usually come on gradually, often starting with tingling, itching or numbness of the palm, thumb and first two fingers.  Carpal tunnel symptoms may be present while sleeping or upon waking at first, and may be present during daily activities as the condition worsens.

Weakness from carpal tunnel may make it more difficult to grip or carry things, and the fingers may lose coordination when performing daily tasks.  Wrist pain and hand pain is usually present, but carpal tunnel pain may travel up as far as the elbow. If carpal tunnel syndrome becomes chronic, the muscles of the thumb may start to waste away.

Effective Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Wrist Pain

Most treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome involves braces, casts, night splints, rest and medication.  All of these carpal tunnel treatments are passive and don’t effectively treat the cause of carpal tunnel syndrome. In fact, bracing of the wrist can actually make carpal tunnel symptoms worse.  A more active form of treatment is needed to correct the underlying cause of carpal tunnel syndrome and prevent a reoccurrence of symptoms.

Active Release Technique treatment for carpal tunnel has a success rate of over 90%, and addresses all components of carpal tunnel: muscles, tendons, fascia, nerves and the surrounding soft tissue.  In addition to Active Release, Chiropractic can help restore normal motion and flexibility to the joints of the wrist and hand.  When combined, Chiropractic and Active Release Technique can help decrease pain, correct the underlying cause of carpal tunnel, and return people to activity in a very short period of time.
