Chiropractic - What Conditions do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health.  Chiropractors commonly treat neck pain, back pain, headaches, and pain in the joints of the arms and legs.

Because of his training, Dr. McGahey takes a special interest in the treatment of repetitive stress and overuse conditions, running injuries, sports and spine injuries, as well as the treatment of headaches and migraines.

Do I Need a Referral From My Doctor to See a Chiropractor?

No, patients do not need a referral from their medical doctor to see a Chiropractor. Chiropractors are first contact physicians, and are so defined in federal and state regulations.

Does Chiropractic Treatment Really Work?

Scientific evidence proving that Chiropractic care works is overwhelming. Over the past 20 years, many controlled and independent research studies have shown again and again that Chiropractic care is safe and effective.

Is Chiropractic Treatment Beneficial for Children?

Yes, children can benefit from Chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls, injuries and blows from normal daily activities, playing, and participating in sports. The result can be symptoms that include back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Dr. McGahey always adapts Chiropractic care to the needs of individual patients, and in the case of children the treatment is very gentle.

Is Active Release Technique® Treatment Beneficial for Children?

Children can also benefit from Active Release Technique®. Children play hard and get hurt in just the same way adults do.  Sprains, strains, falls and injuries from playing and participating in sports can cause pain and time away activity due to injury.

The good news is that children respond very quickly to this type of treatment, meaning they can get back to playing or back in the game quickly with little time lost to injury.

Will My Insurance Cover Chiropractic Care with Dr. McGahey?

The majority of all insured American workers have coverage for Chiropractic services built in to their health care plans, including coverage for car accidents and on-the-job injuries.

Dr. McGahey is a preferred provider for Regence, Premera, Lifewise, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, First Choice, Uniform Medical Plan, and many others. On-the-job injuries and automobile accidents are often covered at 100% and no referral is needed.

What Type of Education and Training do Chiropractors Have?

Chiropractors are educated as primary contact health care practitioners, with an emphasis on musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment.

Educational requirements for doctors of Chiropractic are among the most stringent of any of the health care professions. Students typically complete a 4-year pre-medical undergraduate college degree, which is then followed by another four to five years of academic study in Chiropractic College. This is followed by board certification, licensing, and yearly mandatory continuing education and study.

Is Chiropractic Treatment Safe?

Yes, Chiropractic treatment is safe and effective.  While any form of health treatment contains a degree of inherent risk, there is little danger in Chiropractic care when administered by a licensed practitioner.

To assure competency, all states require that Chiropractors be board-qualified, licensed, and regulated according to stringent criteria. Statistics show that patient risk is substantially lower for Chiropractic because the use of prescription drugs and surgery are not used.

What are Chiropractic Adjustments?

A Chiropractor typically uses his/her hands to manipulate and mobilize the joints of the body in order to reduce pain, increase movement and flexibility, and restore function of the joints and soft tissues.

A Chiropractic adjustment is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort.  Chiropractors will adapt the adjustment to meet the specific needs of each individual. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.

Once I Go to a Chiropractor, Will I Need to Keep Going?

Absolutely not.  In fact, many patients notice dramatic improvement of their symptoms almost immediately.  Others with more involved conditions or injuries, or who have been in pain for many years, may take a little bit longer to feel better.

Some Chiropractic patients may treat for a short period of time to recover from an athletic injury and get back to competition. Others may choose to see a Chiropractor for ongoing maintenance to improve athletic performance or just to keep feeling well.  Whether you choose to see a Chiropractor for a single visit or for ongoing maintenance is always your decision, but there are benefits in all situations.
