Active Release Technique® for Golfer's Elbow Pain

Golfer’s Elbow, also known as medial epicondylitis, is an overuse condition that causes elbow pain over the inside of the elbow and forearm.

Golfer's Elbow is caused by repetitive use of the elbow just like Tennis Elbow, except the pain occurs on the inside of the elbow instead of the outside.

Active Release Technique® is incredibly effective treatment for Golfer’s Elbow.  Unlike braces, injections or taking time off from activity, Active Release Technique focuses on treating the cause of tenis elbow rather than simply focusing on the symptoms.  Active Release Technique is one of the most effective treatments for Golfer’s Elbow and often achieves dramatic results in just a few short treatments.

What is Golfer's Elbow? What is Medial Epicondylitis?

Golfer’s Elbow and medial epicondylitis are two different names for the same condition.  Golfer's Elbow is a repetitive stress injury that causes elbow pain at the point where the muscles and tendons on the forearm attach to the inside of the elbow.  This attachment point is called the medial epicondyle, so the condition is called medial epicondylitis.

Repetitive use or overuse of these muscles and tendons results in stiffness, inflammation and pain over the inside of the elbow and forearm.  Golfer's Elbow can make even simple activities with the hand and forearm painful.  Golfer's Elbow, Tennis Elbow, and elbow bursitis all respond quickly with Active Release treatment.

What Causes Golfer's Elbow Pain?

The most common cause of Golfer’s Elbow is repetitive use or overuse of the muscles on the inside of the forearm.  As these muscles become overworked, inflammation sets in and scar tissue forms where the muscles and tendons attach at the inside of the elbow.  As the muscles become progressively more stiff and weak, they become more susceptible to further injury.

Golfer’s Elbow pain is common in golfers, but also in people who do physical labor, use a computer for a living, or play sports because of the repetitive nature of these activities.  Other causes of Golfer’s Elbow include direct trauma to the inside of the elbow or improper form with sports or physical activity.

What Are the Symptoms of Golfer's Elbow?

Pain over the inside of the elbow is the most common symptom of Golfer’s Elbow.  Elbow pain and stiffness may radiate down the inside of the forearm towards the little finger.  Grasping objects with your hand or bending your wrist can be very painful and your grip may start to feel weak. There may also be swelling present around the elbow and occassionally numbness or tingling in the ring and little finger on the affected side.

If Golfer’s Elbow continues untreated, elbow pain become deep and chronic and grip strength may start to decrease.  Chronic Golfer's Elbow is often bad enough that people will avoid activities involving their hands because their elbow pain is just too severe.

Active Release Technique® Treatment for Golfer's Elbow

In order for Golfer’s Elbow treatment to be effective, three specific objectives need to be accomplished:

1.  Break up scar tissue and adhesions in the soft tissues around the elbow

2.  Return normal function to the muscles and tendons of the forearm

3.  Reverse inflammation and swelling around the elbow

  1. Active Release Technique can accomplish these three objectives in a short period of time, with dramatic results and a quick return to activity.  People who suffer from Golfer's Elbow usually enjoy dramatic relief from elbow pain in just a few treatments.
