How do Custom Foot Orthics Work?
The arches of the feet are the foundation of your body. They are designed to absorb shock while protecting your spine, joints, and soft tissues from damaging stress as you stand, walk or run.
Your feet perform better when all of the muscles of the foot are healthy and the, arches are in their ideal stable positions. If the arches aren’t properly supported, the muscles and soft tissues can become injured.
Custom foot orthotics work by supporting the arches and realigning the foot and ankle. This allows the feet and arches to stay in proper alignment when you’re walking, running or standing. Orthotics also help by absorbing damaging shock every time your foot strikes the ground.
Custom Foot Orthotics for Overpronation
When you walk or run, your feet should stay in a fairly neutral position during every step. Even when you stand your feet and ankles should be in proper alignment. Unfortunately, most people overpronate when they walk or run, meaning their feet and ankles roll to the inside. Overpronation places a lot of stress on the joints and muscles of the foot and ankle, and translates shock through the knees, legs and hips.
Over time, overpronation can lead to chronic foot and heel pain, ankle pain, and even knee and hip pain. Custom foot orthotics help keep the foot and ankle in proper alignment, eliminate damaging shock to the knees and hips, and eliminate pain and injury while making walking and running much more comfortable.
How Can I Tell if I Overpronate?
First, stand in front of a mirror in your bare feet. The arch on the inside of your foot should be rounded and well defined. If it appears fairly flat or touches the floor, then your foot is overpronated.
Second, people who overpronate tend to wear out the inner edge of their shoes (heel and toe) more quickly than the outside.
Finally, try the wet foot test. Get your feet wet and walk on flat pavement, and then look for a smooth, round arch. If your foot print is large or lacking a significant round arch, you may be an overpronator and likely benefit from custom foot orthotics.
